  1. I never could figure out just what exactly Northern Soul is. It is unheard of over here. What it looks like is unfamiliar records by familiar artists. Like I recognize most of the people on the list but I don't recognize the specific song. It seems to be obscure records by non-obscure artists. Even though I know most of the fingers here the only songs I recognize are The Snake by Al Wilson because I know the Johnny Rivers version, and the Night by Frankie Valli because I know the fantastic version by Lene Lovich. I think the Night was on his only album that he made on Motown. I'm not sure I ever heard it though.

  2. Northern Soul was was a slightly odd phenomenon arising in soul clubs in the North of England in the late sixties through to the mid-seventies. The records were manly Motown-inspired records often by artists no-one had heard of. They all came from the US (the records) and were highly sought after. Today an original Northern Soul 45 can fetch a lot of money indeed.

The music was largely upbeat and is instantly recognisable as 'Northern' when heard.

My all-time favourites are numbers 32, 36, 45, 2, 11, 24 and 23. The music of the Gods. Impossible to be depressed when these are playing.
